Personally, as a soccer dad, I have to admit that I took for granted
the work being done on my behalf of my two daughters. Now that I take
stock of the condition of our program I see how precarious the program’s future
is.
In the past few years a
small number of hard working volunteers have kept the soccer program
alive. Those volunteers are now growing tired and there is a need for
them to pass on their knowledge and to share the workload with new volunteers.
Two weeks ago I was asked by the Executive to step in and act as
the interim Soccer Director. The first step I took was to listen
and learn what I could about the history of the program, and it is clear that
what the program needs is a structure which supports more people; each doing a
little bit of work.
Coaching:
On the coaching side we do have a dedicated cadre of experienced
coaches, however more coaches are needed. We need to attract interested
parents and ensure that they receive the training they need, and welcome them
onto teams as assistants.
Administration:
We are in trouble. More help is needed.
We cannot rely on the same two or three volunteers each year to
make it happen. These dedicated volunteers are willing to pass on their
experience and share the workload, but the soccer community, as a whole needs
to step up and assist.
My Plan:
Step one:
The Dakota Soccer committee:
I will be drafting the responsibilities and commitment of each
position over the next few weeks. Prior to registration I will have terms
of references for each committee position written and posted on the web site,
and available at registration.
Step two:
Recruit Committee volunteers
I am asking each soccer parent to consider stepping forward to
assist in the planning and running of the up coming summer season.
Without additional help, the program is at risk.
At registration I will be soliciting participation at the coach
and planning level. Please consider helping.
I welcome all questions, and comments.
